I'm Skeptical, But...This AI Tool Works

It’s already saving me time—maybe an hour a day

In today’s email:

  1. Why I love spreadsheets

  2. Why I hate email

  3. Why I started using Fyxer

MAIN ARTICLE

Spreadsheets made me a productivity nerd. Email made me a mess.
Enter Fyxer—the AI tool that’s actually saving me time (for real).

I Love Spreadsheets

I’ve been writing this primarily spreadsheet focused newsletter for a couple years now.

I’ve been making video tutorials primarily about spreadsheets for a little longer than that.

It all stems from me finding better and faster ways to do some real practical things at work…

  • I find a solution to my problem

  • I am overjoyed at the time it saves

  • I am eager to replicate it

  • I find that sharing the process both solidifies it for myself and helps others

  • I find that I enjoy teaching as much as implementing the solutions themselves

Spreadsheets have been the gateway drug to productivity for me.

Sure, computer programming is the next step and I love it as well, but spreadsheets are just so accessible to practically everyone that it became a real fun

I Hate Email

I mean, I love it too, but…

The problem? I let it take over.

  • Work emails.

  • Personal emails.

  • Random newsletters.

  • Order updates.

  • Social media notifications.

It’s just a lot. And I don’t prioritize well.

  • The newest email gets my attention, even if it’s less important.

  • I waste time sorting through junk instead of doing real work.

  • Inbox-zero usually feels like a pipe dream.

If I were more focused, maybe it wouldn’t be as stressful.

If I were more diligent and task-oriented, maybe it wouldn’t be something I wasted time on.

If I were better at knocking things out, maybe I’d see INBOX-ZERO at least sometimes.

So, I love how email theoretically connects us.

But I hate how it often makes my days feel disorienting and fractured.

An AI Email Assistant

I’m a skeptic.

But I want to stay productive. I want to stop wasting time.

I’d heard about this tool called Fyxer earlier last year, and I gave it about four seconds of thought before discarding it.

Well, it popped on my radar again in two different ways this past week.

First, I heard Andrew Wilkinson, Sam Parr and Shaan Puri talking about it on a podcast.

Then, funny enough, Fyxer reached out about sponsoring this newsletter. Perfect excuse to actually try it…

Out of the box, it does two real important things for me.

  1. It automatically labels emails

  2. It joins video calls, records the call and takes notes to summarize the meeting for the participants afterwards.

I’ve been using both of these features, and it does indeed cut down on the mess that my inbox usually feels like.

Switch Context Switching OFF

The simple act of automatically categorizing things has enabled me to batch my time in the inbox.

Instead of going top down and prioritizing on the spot, I’ve got different priority items in different folders that I can knock out (or delete) all in one fell swoop.

This simple act has cut down on time and mental effort already.

Auto Email Drafts

This piece of the puzzle is pretty nifty. You know how Gmail has auto-complete suggestions and Gemini built in?

Same thing but better.

I personally do not use Gemini to draft emails at all. And the auto-complete is sort of useful to save a split second here and there.

With Fyxer, it will automatically draft a reply email to messages that it recognizes as needing replies.

Nothing is sent automatically so you have to open the email draft, check it out, and hit send.

But this feature apparently gets better with time as it adapts to your tone and voice.

I’ve used it a few times so far and even with the short amount of time that I’ve used it, it’s pretty good for a starting point.

I always have to tweak and/or add things, but I’m going from skeptical to impressed pretty quickly.

Notetaking

I had a consulting call with a client a couple days ago and used the notetaking feature for the first time.

All I had to do was connect my Google Calendar and the notetaking agent joined the call automatically

Immediately after the call, it emailed me a 950-word summary of the meeting and a link to the video recording.

I usually record these in OBS, upload to YouTube and share as an unlisted video. This saves me a ton of time per consult on a service that is really important on these walkthrough sessions.

Saving An Hour A Day

This seems to be Fyxer’s main tagline - save an hour a day.

Honestly, I think it’s pretty close to accurate. The notetaking app itself for sure saves that much time, and the email tool has the same potential.

I’ve felt more productive since starting to use it, and it’s turned into the first specialized AI tool that actually does something really useful for me on a daily basis.

Compatibility

Right now, it works with Outlook and Gmail.

It pairs with Google Meet, Zoom, and Teams for the notetaking part.

I’m using it in Gmail. And the video call I’ve used it for was in Teams.

To start, I simply approved access to Gmail and my Google Calendar. Very simple. Very straightforward. Very quick.

I’ve been skeptical of AI assistants. But after using Fyxer, I’m genuinely impressed. If email chaos is your struggle too, check it out here and see if it saves you time.
