Fathom: The AI Tool That Fixed My Meeting Problem (for free)
Prior to last month, I had been recording meetings with OBS (open-source screen recorder) and emailing myself notes after each call.
It worked, but it took a while to edit the video. And I always forgot something.
I stumbled across Fathom.video recently, and it's fundamentally changed how I handle virtual meetings—letting me focus on the conversation instead of my notes. And it records everything automatically to the cloud.
This comes after using Fyxer, which I wrote about last month. (They’re both great, but the notetaking was a secondary feature for that one and it’s the primary feature here)…
The Meeting Problem I Used to Have
Let's be honest about what happens in most virtual meetings:
Taking notes while trying to actively participate is nearly impossible
Finding that "one thing" someone said in a recording takes forever
Action items get lost in the shuffle without clear documentation
Afterwards, if I don’t immediately write down action items, I forget one or two
What Fathom Actually Does
With one click, Fathom instantly gives you:
Complete video recording with screen sharing
Accurate transcript (available in 28 languages)
Quick summary ready in seconds
Clear action items pulled from the conversation
Searchable meeting archive
In real life, this changed my client work dramatically. During a recent training call I recorded our Teams meeting and then let Fathom generate:
Action Items (and who is responsible)
Meeting Summary
Meeting Purpose
Takeaways
Topics
Next Steps
And all of these things were in my inbox, neatly ordered and with hyperlinks to where they were referenced in the recorded video call.
Total time: 4 minutes instead of 45.
Four Standout Features
1. Fast, accurate delivery - I’m not kidding, it was in my inbox in a minute or two. The email was easy to scan, accurate and organized much better than any notes I could have taken.
2. It’s FREE - This blew my mind a little bit. I expect to pay for something like this. And, yes, there are paid teams versions that I’ll probably upgrade to when my trial of all the advanced features (like the action item summaries) runs out, but the core product, WHICH IS GREAT, is free forever.
And those premium features are actually included in the free version on a limited basis👇
3. Ask Fathom About the Recording The screen recording quality is great, but what’s even better is you can ask Fathom questions about the recording, and it will pull up answers based on the transcript with timestamps in the video where the item was discussed
Type "What were my follow-up items?"
Get exact moments from any meeting where it was discussed
Get bullet points of what I need to do
4. Teams and CRM data entry I love Fathom for the individual plan, but if you’re on a team and use a CRM like HubSpot or Salesforce, you’re going to be even happier. Custom calls remain in one searchable spot, and you can automate post-call CRM data entry for your entire team. Check out all the team features on the pricing comparison page.

Why I'm Sharing This
The whole reason I started this newsletter was to learn how to save time by automating things and then teaching you how to do the same.
I’ve taken a lot of video consulting calls over the past three months and been able to save a ton of time and energy by not stressing over notetaking.
Of the two tools I’ve used, Fathom is my current favorite. Although, if you need help cleaning up your email inbox and taking AI video notes, check out my write-up on Fyxer which is an incredibly useful tool, too.
P.S. If you end up trying it, I'd love to hear what you think. Reply and let me know—did save you as much time as me?
