Sheets in Canva

I didn’t expect this. Or ask for it. Or think I wanted it.

However, Canva has released Sheets (alongside a bunch of other things at Canva Create 2025) inside their main product. You can now create a spreadsheet inside Canva and use many of the same functions you’re used to finding in Google Sheets or Excel.

Many, that is, but not all. I don’t think this is meant to be a full-fledged data machine.

Other Canva AI Tools You Might’ve Missed

Canva dropped a lot of news during their event last week, and I went through the interesting bits on this video if want to see what else they’ve got cooking.

How Many Functions are in Canva Sheets?

There are currently 67 functions listed in Canva Sheets. This is not many. That’s around 13% of what Google Sheets offers.

It’s plenty for most standard, normal-person, data wrangling.

But compare that to the 500+ functions that both Google Sheets and Excel boast.

How’d I arrive at these numbers? I scraped the functions from Canva since I couldn’t find them listed anywhere. Google and Microsoft both list theirs.

And, I may have made a Google Sheet with all the lists and a little search bar so you can see what function lives where.

Because I’m a dork.

You’re welcome.

Why Use Canva Sheets?

With drastically less horsepower in the function department and a practically non-existent toolbar compared with something like Excel, why would we ever use Canva Sheets?

I think we’ll be surprised how readily Canva users hop on the spreadsheet train.

This gives a large creative audience access to some entry-level spreadsheet functionality.

It’s very easy to add graphics to the sheets and spruce them up to look nice, and this is going to be way more important to the average Canva user than the average Excel user.

Canva Sheets for Media Planning

Throwing down a calendar for social media posting, making it pop with some lively dropdown selectors and then attaching links to the visual assets that are posted is real easy with some templates already at launch.

Canva Sheets for Invoicing

I expect invoicing will be a big draw here. Creatives working freelance should be invoicing clients, but you’d be surprised how few have a good system for this. Dialing in a presentable template for this, complete with a Stripe link for the overachiever might be something that gets popular.

Canva Sheets for Project Tracking

Scoping and tracking a project are a lot easier in something like a spreadsheet than on a blank canvas. Task trackers, checklists and calendars are fairly easy to whip up here in Canva, and none of them require anything technically complicated from a data standpoint.

Canva Sheets for Budgeting

Maybe? There are several templates for this built-in already. But I also think budgeting is easy for everybody to talk about and then nobody to actually use. We’ll see.

How to Access Canva Sheets?

This is going to be built into the core Canva product. You’ll be able to select Sheets as a design just like you would select a document, whiteboard or video.

As of the time of this article, it’s available to a limited number of users as they prepare to release it to the public. Check here for the latest updates from Canva.
